Tips To Get Glowing Skin This Summer

Victoria Hayes • 4 July 2024

Summer is here, finally and it’s the perfect time to let your natural glow shine through.

But with the sun’s rays, humidity, and increased outdoor activities, your skin needs extra care to stay radiant and healthy.

Here at The Renew Skin Clinic Cheshire, I’m excited to share my top tips and product recommendations for achieving glowing summer skin.

Follow this easy guide to keep your complexion fresh, hydrated, and protected all season long.

How can I make my skin clear and glowing?

Many people that visit my Cheshire Skin Clinic know there is no magic pill for glowing skin. It’s a combination of lifestyle – eating well and getting enough sleep but a targeted and well advised skincare routine will do wonders for your Summer skin.

I’m sharing with you my top skin expert tips that can lead to short and long term results.

1. Apply SPF daily

We know this but sunscreen is non-negotiable for healthy summer skin. The majority of your wrinkles have come from sun exposure but here’s my must have product to keep those wrinkles and future sun damage at bay.

Medik8 Advanced Day Cream has an added blue light filter for computer and phone screen protection.

It offers a comprehensive environmental shield against the sun's damaging, ageing and burning effects as well as air pollution, blue light, infrared damage and glycation (damage to collagen and elastin within the skin). It therefore works to prevent the formation of wrinkles, dark spots, dullness and uneven skin texture.

Or Perhaps you need something else that can combat existing damage?

This Vitamin C Serum for Daily Radiance is wonderful at delivering powerful antioxidant protection alongside broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen to shield the skin against premature signs of ageing.

Its visible smoothing and radiance-boosting benefits create the ideal glowy base for makeup application. Use daily for a concise regime that maintains protection against the sun and wider environment.

2. Use Hyaluronic Acid

If your skin is looking and feeling thirsty. Applying a moisturiser or serum that is rich in hyaluronic acid which will help speed up that Summer glow.

This incredible hydrator can hold up to 100x its own weight in water, meaning it’ll draw water into every layer of the skin and hold it there. The best serum for glowing skin is likely to contain this punchy ingredient. I’d recommend applying this onto damp skin to maximise absorption and is perfect for those in the plus 30 age range.

Here are two of my Skin Clinic Faves

3. Cut back on the booze

We love a Summer Spritzer but cutting out the alcohol will help your achieve that plump Summer Skin in no time at all.

Drinking causes your glow to fade because Alcohol deprives the skin of Vitamin A (which is the amazing stuff that revs up skin cell turnover so that new and light-reflecting skin cells are pushed to the surface).

Although, alcohol’s biggest skin sin is dehydration. In the kidneys, alcohol increases water loss by suppressing the hormone vasopressin which helps you to reabsorb water. The knock-on effect is that skin cells effectively dry out leading to sallowness, inflammation and more prominent lines.

H2O Anyone?

4.Add acid into your routine

One of the most common skin complaints is large pores and ‘who can I make them smaller?’

Our pores appear larger when they are filled with dirt, dead skin cells and keratin (protein) and excess oils.

Using an acid to cleanse the face (with expert advice on application frequency), makes the pores appear to shrink. A BHA Acid is a skin-friendly acid that works to chemically exfoliate dead skin cells and dissolve dirt lurking deep within pores. Hello, glowing skin.

Here’s one of my faves I use in the Clinic.

5. Retinol Ready?

If fine lines and dullness are your challenge then one ingredient you may want to add to your regime is retinol.

Retinol and Retinoic Acid are both derivatives of Vitamin A, and when used on your skin correctly, they can speed up skin cell turnover, boost collagen production, and unblock pores. It’s also an Anti Inflammatory too.

Please be advised to use Retinols with caution, as it can easily cause your skin to become dry. If misused, or overused, retinol can also cause the skin to become red and create pigmentation issues. Always seek professional skin care advice before beginning.

This is because Vitamin A isn’t light stable so it won’t work during light hours, hence to only use in the evening.

Happy to recommend this one

6. Invest in skincare with Vitamin C

There’s plenty of research to back up the benefits of vitamin C when applied topically.

It helps your skin to fight free radical damage and it also aids collagen production because its acidity triggers the skin into healing itself. The main protein found in skin, collagen is the one responsible for maintaining support, suppleness and elasticity of the skin.

It also helps brighten skin by blocking an enzyme known as tyrosinase, which is responsible for speeding up melanin production that leads to those dark spots.

The Tetra Luxe product is amazing!

7. Try a face peel

Don’t be scared of a rejuvenating skin peels. These can be a booster to any glow up on your skin care regime (we’re not talking the scary Sex and The City peel either).

Skin peels which use active compounds like alpha and polyhydroxy acids. These peels exfoliate and smooth the skin’s surface and also stimulate collagen and skin matrix formation to create a strong and healthy skin structure.

Medik 8 have the best selection of peels and I am happy to prescribe one for you, just drop me a message of take a look at
their menu.

8. Fade dark spots

Pigmentation can be frustrating, especially in Summer. The good news is that new formulations are hitting the market that have been proven to fade the appearance of these pesky spots.

Medik8 Oxy R Peptides Serum can help aid this reduction.

9. Look after your microbiome

We love keeping our guts healthy but what about our skin microbiome?

The latest trend is how we can protect the skin’s microbiota, which make up the microbiome – essentially, an ecosystem living on your skin that works to help keep it healthy.

Trevor Steyn, biochemist and founder of Esse Skincare, explains that sitting at home or in your office will only expose you to a fraction of the potentially beneficial microbes that you’d be exposed to in a forest. ‘Moreover, stress can affect your immune system’s response to new microbes, which can lead to inflammation and a spike in the rate at which the skin ages,’ adds Steyn.

Cue skincare laced with probiotics that can form colonies on the skin’s surface, which helps to balance the microbiome. This improves cell-to-cell communication and lowers inflammation, which improves the rate at which skin ages.

Use this product from Medik8 to help with your microbiome.

10. Reach for the E (Vitamin E)

Like vitamin C, Vitamin E is also effective at minimising the damaging effects of free radicals by donating a hydrogen atom, which ultimately renders the free radical harmless.

Pair the two for best results and opt for a formula that already combines the two, like Dermaviduals Prescriptive Serum which can be mixed to meet your skins specific needs.

Achieving glowing summer skin is all about maintaining hydration, protecting your skin from the sun, and using the right products to keep your complexion clear and radiant. By following these expert tips and incorporating the recommended products into your routine, you can enjoy beautiful, healthy skin all summer long. Remember, consistency is key, so stick to your skincare regimen and enjoy the sunshine responsibly!

How will Micro-needling improve my skin and give me a smoother appearance?
by Victoria Hayes 15 November 2021
How will Micro-needling improve my skin and give me a smoother appearance? As a leading Facial Rejuvenation expert in the Cheshire area , I meet many people who have yet to hear about Micro Needling! Most of the common skin concerns I see in my Alsager Salon , mainly with my over 40 client’s is dull, ageing, dehydrated skin. People think to have a smoother, fresher and a more even-toned appearance, you need to have invasive facial surgery! Fear not my friend, I have the perfect non-invasive solution for you! To celebrate Healthy Skin Month in November, I am showing you the most amazing treatment from me at Alsager Beauty. There’s never been a better time to take care of your skin, but if you don’t want to go under the knife, what is the alternative? Let me introduce you to latest celebrity facial, the Rejuvapen Micro-needling treatment, AKA Collagen Stimulation Therapy . THE go to non invasive facial treatment right now. So Vicky, what the heck is CST? It's a pen-like device used to puncture the skin to create tiny holes (not visible to the naked eye) to stimulate a wound healing response. The action of the pen breaks up old collagen type 1 and forms new young and springy type 3 in its place. This wound healing response results in the body producing more collagen and elastin, (which we stop producing naturally at around the age of 35, boo!) when the body is in the healing stage. It also stimulates the reproduction of hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the skin (which also depletes from 40+). This juicy little acid keeps everything hydrated and plump. So win-win! I've had 3 treatments and I can definitely tell the difference. I’ve noticed my skin looks and feels firmer and my pores on my cheeks have reduced. My clients have all commented on their own skin's improvement. I've also had great results in reducing pigmentation patches. Take a look for yourself!
