Firstly, if you are stressed, depressed or have other physiological problems this can exacerbate skin problems, such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, to name a few. I’m sure if you suffer from any of the above you might agree with me. This is mainly due to catecholamine levels being high and these are major elements in the response to stress and are part of the ‘flight-or-fight’ response.
When these levels are high, it increases cell inflammation and reduces the body's ability to heal and repair damage, exacerbating an already irritated skin condition.
Here are some suggestions to promote skin health and give that you that feel good factor-
-Cutting down on sugar - studies have shown a decreation in depression, anxiety, fewer mood swings, and a better mental focus once sugar is reduced. Sugar is also the cause of premature aging as it breaks down collagen and makes elastin brittle, causing lines at rest.
-Sleep well
- Getting a good night's sleep is as essential as eating and drinking. Poor sleep is linked to physical problems such as a weakened immune system and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.
-Book a massage-
Massage reduces stress and increases relaxation. It reduces pain and muscle soreness and tension, it helps to improve circulation, energy and alertness, also lowering heart rates and blood pressure, win win! And who doesn't want more ‘me’ time.
-Take supplements-
Even if you have the best diet in the world, our skin is the last to receive any nutrients so supplementing with a good quality multivitamin is always recommended. And as we know we need to fuel our bodies with the right nutrients to function and repair well.
-Stress less-
if that's possible! Haha, but yes, we all worry about many things in life, but ‘there's always a solution to a problem’ says Professor Cary Cooper, an occupational health expert at the University of Lancaster. Not taking control of the situation and doing nothing will only make your problems worse. He says the keys to good stress management are building emotional strength, being in control of your situation, having a good social network, and adopting a positive outlook.
-Meditation-
It might not be for you but if you haven't tried it, give it ago. Download one of the many apps and I bet you'll benefit from just a few minutes. I like calm or if you’re into Peleton, they also have some amazing meditations, which are not too ‘woo woo’.
I hope this was of some use to you, and see you soon for some ‘me’ time…..or a relaxing massage based Facial!
